4 Gigs In One Calendar Week!!
Apr. 6th, 2006 12:30 amYeah, I think that sets a new record, plus I turned down another 2 in the next couple of days! Quick reviews then...
Planet Smashers 27/03/2006 - I had never heard of this lot, it was an all ska bill down at Satan's Hollow. The first band on weren't out of High School and covered the theme to Tetris! Brilliant!
Then came Mr Shiraz from Leeds featuring a singer with Slipknot facepaint, some guy injured himself in front of us, they also had a ska version of Bez. Great fun!
Random Hand from Keighley were arguably the best for songcraft and looked the most professional band on offer. Then came the Planet Smashers who despite being more laidback ska, knew how to work the crowd and soon had the majority of people skanking round the circular venue before inviting a lot of them (myself included!) on stage.
All these bands could tell the Strokes a hell of a lot of things about CROWD INTERACTION! I am not saying you need a moshpit to be good but you should acknowledge people are there.
Oceansize 30/03/2006 - They make beautiful prog-rock sounds, seemingly dissonant guitar chugs into perfect harmonies and the singer is an interesting cross between Matt Bellamy and snarling Thom Yorke with a dash of Manc.
The only problem is their live show. For the first half an hour, they look half shit scared, half disinterested. This is despite being on home turf and with the crowd that has turned up despite 3 years away. The second half, they seem to grow and excel and it is very, very good. I can't wait to hear the new album.
Hundred Reasons/65 Days of Static 31/03/2006 + 03/04/2006 - 65 Days of Static still just about elude me, I can't explain fully why, their tunes are immaculate and explosive by turns and the lack of vocals makes them unique but they don't quite grab me in the way Biffy Clyro or Cave-In do, sorry!
HR do grab me! As anyone who knows me knows. Give me Colin Doran's whisper/growl any day! The new tunes are slightly more complex but still definitely in the band's style. A real evolution. While the old ones would make me want to move even if I was tied in a straitjacket, drowning under the sea! Plus I'll Find You is one of the rock anthems of the past decade. In short, brilliant.
The only problem, they were only on at Leeds Cockpit and Academy 3. A sign maybe more of the musical climate rather than quality.
3 Doors Down were on at Academy 1 when Hundred Reasons were at Academy 3! Stupid, gay Britain!
