So, I've got myself a permanent job! The first one I've ever got, all the others have been temporary or freelance, which as an intelligent University Graduate with plenty of work experience, says a fair bit about the state of the economy in this country.
It's in the Council Tax call centre at Manchester City Council and pays well over the average wage for that type of job. It also doesn't involve sales, just customer service, which is what I want.
The job also allows me to help people on an everyday basis, which is enjoyable. The ones that want to be helped and don't just want to shout at you for no reason..!
With Manchester Temps (the agency) closing and the Council not taking on any more people as temps or making any recruitment at all for a while after this, it's a relief as it was such a battle to stay on.
I've been made to sign a 'gagging order' in my contract to not say anything to any media persons who may contact us about it, such is the furore surrounding the issue.
The Union wanted to get involved with what we were signing as it includes certain restraints, including not being able to sue the Council in the future.
By pure coincidence, my last day as a temp will be spent on strike! I personally don't believe in crossing picket lines but I know that some of my colleagues will be doing it for the money, I suppose it's different when you have a mortgage and kids etc but for one day, not weeks, I struggle to see why they aren't joining in...
